Better Outcomes, Not More Hours

Leading Forward: A monthly perspective on leadership, innovation, and the evolving intersection of insurance, law, technology, and data.

One of the most important conversations happening quietly across our industry right now is about outcomes.

For decades, much of the insurance defense model has been structured around hours.

  • Hours worked.

  • Hours billed.

  • Hours reviewed.

That model has been deeply ingrained in how legal services are delivered.

But as claims become more complex, litigation timelines extend, and insurers face increasing cost pressure, a different question is beginning to surface:

What if success isn’t measured by hours — but by outcomes?

Outcomes like:

→ Earlier resolution.
→ Better alignment on litigation strategy.
→ Clearer visibility into trends and performance.
→ More predictable results for carriers and policyholders.

Technology, data, and stronger collaboration between insurers and law firms are beginning to make that shift possible.

Not by replacing legal expertise.

But by helping legal teams focus their time where it creates the most value.

The firms that will stand out in the years ahead may not be the ones that simply work the most hours.

They may be the ones that deliver the best outcomes.

Because at the end of the day, insurers, legal teams, and policyholders all share the same goal:

Resolving matters thoughtfully, efficiently, and fairly.

Curious how others see the conversation around outcomes evolving across insurance defense.
